Judge Smyth was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1986 and practised as a Barrister until 2002 when she accepted the Judicial appointment of Chairman of the Industrial and Fair Employment Tribunal.

In 2007 Judge Smyth was appointed Vice President of the Tribunals and in 2010 was appointed a County Court Judge. She is currently responsible for the majority of the family work at County Court level and is one of a number of designated Extradition Judges. All Extradition cases in Northern Ireland are dealt with by County Court Judges.
